It is usually defined as a three-dimensional network of macromolecules that offers mechanical and biochemical support to the cells around it. The extracellular matrix is made of three main types of extracellular macromolecules: (i) Polysaccharide glycosaminoglycan’s (commonly known as mucopolysaccharides) or GAGs which are usually linked covalently to proteins in the form of proteoglycans; composition and orientation of extracellular matrix (ECM). The ECM within heart valves is primarily comprised of collagen, elastic fibers, and proteoglycans and glycosaminoglycans, although other ECM components are present as well. Taken together, the ECM performs several roles in heart valves.
